Very annoying
October 15, 2007
Does anybody else get annoyed when a cell phone goes off during a church service? Seriously, why does this still happen? I understand we live in a cell phone-driven society. Rarely do I see anybody driving anymore that is NOT on their phone. And I hate to generalize, but it is usually a mom in her gas-guzzling SUV going to pick her kids up from soccer practice. Those are the worst! I can’t stand it when a car is holding up several behind it, then when I finally pass, that person is on their phone, unaware of the world around them. It makes me want to slash their tires.
So back to the church service. Again, why does this still happen? It has happened several times at the church I attend. I also notice that people with the most annoying ring tones are the ones that leave their phones on full blast. Do they honestly think their ringtone sounds good? Yesterday, during church, someone’s phone went off. Big surprise. Then it went off again, the same phone I might add. This didn’t happen just two or three times, but four times. Honestly, are you so concerned with your phone that you cannot turn it off for 2 hours a week and give that time solely to God? To me, that is extremely selfish and rude.
Please, for the sake of everyone, be courteous enough to turn your phone off during church. And if you own a phone, please do not drive ever.

i agree with your sentimonies…especially as someone who works at a church.
the people who facilitate church, whether they be volunteers or ’staff’ try as best they can to provide a place where Christians can worship the Almighty and have their own needs addressed, and where non-believers might have a chance to make a decision for Christ.
there are few things more distracting than a cell phone going off (recently at our church it happened during the middle silence of an altar call…).
it is the evidence of the attitude that church is about ME and no one else (especially not about me giving something to God!). we need a kick in the pants and we need to remember that Church is a serious, serious thing. full of joy and wonder and anticipation, yes, but very serious. lives hang in the balance and we need to recongize that.

At River Valley we’ve found the answer: meet in a MOVIE THEATER!
Seriously though, I bet most people are more diligent about silencing their phones during a movie than during church.

It was me. I planted a phone under the 3rd pew in the left section. The ringtone was “oooh baby don’t know you what that’s worth, oooh heaven is a place on earth” but not the original, but the cover by the bulgarian band “yuctkoviski”
but then again, who didn’t guess it was that?
